Affairs & Betrayal

Affairs & Betrayal

No one ever expects or wants to be betrayed. For this reason, the discovery that your partner has been unfaithful can be very upsetting. It can turn your world upside down and shatters whatever you thought you knew about him and your future together. As well as the profound break in trust, betrayal means a loss of security, loss of respect and, above all, the loss of the ‘perfect relationship’ ideal.

Intense emotions of anger, resentment, blame, and bewilderment can lead to a number of knee-jerk responses such as filing for divorce, retaliation and blocking all contact with the person who committed the betrayal.

But betrayal can be healed, especially if there is an attempt to rebuild trust and communication, the partner patiently supporting the one who was betrayed, and responsive to deal with the relationship problems that may have led to the betrayal.

Why people cheat?

People’s reason for cheating may be an unconscious attempt to get away from relationship problems, rather than tackling them head-on. Or, they are seeking to get some emotional needs met, but looking outside the relationship to do this. In other cases, affairs can be a means to seek pleasure, opportunity and excitement, or even boost their self -esteem.

How Therapy Can Help

If you have been betrayed, you may find yourself preoccupied with the ways in which you can immediately deal with the situation to make the pain disappear, like alcohol, explosive anger, further interrogation or retaliation. Your own self esteem may spiral as you question why. But these are negative. Hypnotherapy and counselling can help you to process your emotions in a healthier way, taking an objective view of the past and reflecting clearly on your present situation to make gentle, yet positive steps toward the next stage of your life. Whatever decision you take will be difficult, but therapy will help you make it in a conscious objective way, putting your well-being first and foremost.

During sessions I will help to clarify the true nature of the relationship by encouraging an open exploration of its strengths and weaknesses. This may reveal unhealthy patterns such as co-dependency or emotional abuse, which will also be looked at in therapy.

  • Thank you Anita, my husband kept telling me to get over it as it was years ago. But that just made me more resentful. The hypnotherapy has helped me let go of the past. I’m taking things slowly and he isn’t rushing me, anymore. The boundaries you helped me with, show him what’s okay and what isn’t. I feel a lot better.

  • The cheating was one of the many red flags I ignored. Probably scared to be on my own. I won’t accept this again. Self- esteem work and affirmations really helped.

  • I kept wishing it hadn’t happened, but it did. Therapy helped me to stop being in denial and try and understand why. It will take time to regain trust but thank you for giving me some direction.

  • Anita helped me to deeply relax during hypnotherapy and I was surprised the next morning when, for the first time in years, I didn’t get the usual ‘morning anxiety’ that I have been waking up with for years.

  • I came to see Anita for sleep problems but uncovered overthinking, fear of judgement and perfectionist habits, that I was completely unaware of, but was affecting my whole life. Anita helped me to understand how this can happen, but also how to deal with too many negative thoughts. Hypnotherapy, CBT and Mindfulness helped me focus back into the moment rather than constantly worrying about the future.
