Breaking Bad Habits

Have you ever wondered why you find it impossible to control an old, or more recent habit through will- power alone? This is because the habit pathways formed in the brain create an automatic response in the ‘unconscious mind’. Trying to control a habit consciously then, is very difficult if not impossible.

In the case of nail biting, to give you an example, while watching TV and even before your conscious mind is even aware, your fingers are already in your mouth and you are biting your nails. This may be the case for many other habits including hair -pulling, skin, spot, nose - picking, teeth grinding (bruxism), thumb sucking, bed-wetting, joint cracking, and smoking to name a few.

Hypnotherapeutic techniques such as Habit Reversal helps to re-wire this conditioned response within the deeper unconscious mind. There is a lot of scientific evidence to support this process and how effective it is at removing unwanted habits. Hypnotherapy combined with CBT will also help you to de-sensitise any triggers and become aware of deeper associations such as boredom, stress, lack of confidence, TV, anxiety, in order to break this vicious cycle.

Hypnotherapy has been proven as a very effective tool in removing unwanted habits. A couple of sessions can give you the freedom of no longer feeling embarrassed, putting you back in control.

  • Hypnotherapy is not like what you see on films, or a swinging watch!  Its meditation allowing you to delve into your subconscious and think about your triggers, feelings and emotions which become apparent in your everyday life, either in actions or behaviours.  There is a CBT element to this practice which is what you take with you when you leave a session - this has been the most effective part in helping me to stop biting my nails and I continue not to bite!
